AIMday Local Democracy

Organised by

We welcome you to AIMday Local Democracy, 17 December 2020!

This year’s event will be held digitally.

We arrange AIMday Local Democracy to bring together academic researchers and local government officials and politicians. Local governments are key actors in achieving the sustainable development goals and this day is to discuss society’s greatest challenges with the help of experts in the field of local democracy from around the world.

Strong research area

Local Democracy is an interdisciplinary research field focused on people’s ability to political influence the decisions that affect them. Thus, local democracy is connected also with the field of development. Poverty is not only a lack of material resources, but also a lack of opportunities to influence one’s own living conditions. We live in a time where global events such as climate change, urbanization and migration are having repercussions in people’s everyday lives. Then it is more important than ever with local democratic institutions that work. Decision-making needs to be effective, transparent and inclusive. All citizens must have the same opportunities for influence. This research field has been fostered by the Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy and we have a large network of researchers. Moreover, this field is largely connected with Uppsala University research on sustainable development and particularly the work of the Forum for Africa Studies.

Your question is the starting point for discussion

AIMday is not an academic conference in the traditional sense. Instead, questions from municipalitites and councilsare the very core of the AIMday format. Your challenges, formulated as one or more questions, set the agenda for face-to-face discussions with academics. All in all – you submit the questions you want to discuss with experts in the field.

Registration for organisations is open until 15 November.

Open new possibilities for your research

AIMday helps you understand the real needs of local governments and how these relate to your own research. What is more, it provides you a golden opportunity to obtain inspiration, knowledge and contacts which benefit your own research and teaching. As an academic you self-select challenges when registering for an AIMday event and hence you share knowledge and ideas with organisations, and even other researchers, within your specific area of interest

Registration for academic scientists is open from 19 November to 5 December.
