Digitalization in Maritime

Welcome to the Digitalization in Maritime AIMday, hosted by The University of Liverpool in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University.  This free event will bring together an intersection of maritime, AI and data professionals, to explore the role AI and technologies could play in advancing innovation of maritime digitalization, discuss real-world challenges and forge new collaborations between The University of Liverpool and industry partners.

The challenge to achieving net zero in maritime by 2050 not only requires a necessary energy transition but also a revolution in the way in which we use data.  Digitalization is therefore viewed as a route to decarbonization – and a route that provides ‘quick wins’ in terms of reduced carbon emissions.  The application of data analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence and simulation provide effective means for characterising the operational environment, as well as testing and optimizing complex multi-modal freight networks and hybrid energy systems at the interface between land and sea.

The University of Liverpool invite industry and regulatory stakeholders across the maritime and last mile cluster to pose these or indeed other questions from their particular operational needs.  We also seek perspectives in relation to the challenges they face in terms of suitable skills, sufficient resources and access to specialist expertise and facilities.

Maritime at The University of Liverpool

Maritime at The University of Liverpool links to numerous strategies and incentives at regional, national and international levels, including the Net Zero for Liverpool City Region which supports a regional transition towards low carbon in maritime; our Centre for Doctoral Training which will train the next generation of engineers in Net Zero Maritime Energy Solutions over the next eight years; and the UK’s flagship Clean Maritime Research Hub, a £21.3m national partnership which aims to decarbonise the UK maritime sector.

Event format

AIMDay® (Academic Industry Meeting day) is a workshop format where challenges are led by industry and framed as questions submitted by participating companies. A selected number of questions inform a central theme, which is discussed in 1-hour breakout sessions of up to 10 people. Each breakout session is curated to include industry specialists, academic experts and funding professionals with the aim to develop collaborative research projects.

Developing partnership – collaboration opportunities through AIMDay

The University of Liverpool has numerous collaboration mechanisms that enable sustainable partnership development, ranging from student placements, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships to joint projects funded through the Impact Acceleration Account. The AIMDay will be facilitated by our professional services colleagues, who will bring expertise in knowledge exchange and the UK funding landscape. The breakout sessions are designed to refine industry challanges and reframe them in the context of The University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University’s research strenghts, co-creating projects that will aid solutions and build partnerships.
